Video marketing in social media marketing strategies has been on the rise since 2016, and four years later, it is crazy the amount of video that is consumed on social media! It has been shown that six out of 10 consumers would rather watch videos on social media versus watching traditional television.
As video continues to grow in popularity on social media channels, new additions to current infamous social media apps and brand new ones on the market are continuing to transform video marketing on social media platforms.
The latest updates that have happened in the digital marketing industry is the explosion of TikTok over the past year, and as of last week, the addition of Reels on Instagram. (Reels resemble TikTok a bit too much, but what can we expect from them that Facebook now owns them!)

Here are some video tips for social media marketing all companies should keep in mind when working on implementing TikTok and Instagram Reels into their social media strategies!
TikTok has been a bit controversial lately with Senators being mandated to delete the app from their government issued cell phones, to President Trump signing an executive order to get TikTok banned, and now with Microsoft looking at purchasing the company, it has been a bit of a dilemma.
The social media application has grown significantly from its Musical.ly days a couple of years ago, and once it’s rebranded into TikTok, it reminded everyone of a better, modern day Vine and consumers were hooked. TikTok came in and stole the show from everyone!
At our office, we have a couple of TikTok fanatics and are a bit ashamed of the amount of time we are spending on this social media app. There is a large range of content on TikTok that anyone can enjoy with hashtags on the #fyp to #over70 hashtag for content regarding users over the age of 70! Yes, even 70 year olds are partaking in the TikTak!
Here are some video tips for social media marketing on TikTok:
- Make sure the file type is .mp4 or .mov
- Video dimensions are 1080X1920
- The video should be a minimum of 287.6MB for iPhone and 72MB for Androids
- Use a 9:16 ratio for the best videos. You can use 1:1, but it will not fill the screen
- Also, stop posting captions where the summary, hashtags and right hand side bar at (We can’t read it anyway!)
- As always, use vertical for social media videos

It is no secret that when it comes to social media platforms, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, is known to take “inspiration” from other social media apps that are successful at the moment. The issue with this is Facebook and Instagram’s many popular copy-cat features end up surpassing the original social media apps popularity. There is just something that no one can explain about this!
On August 5, 2020, Instagram finally launched Reels in the United States and the UK after a year-long testing in Brazil. Instagram Reels allows for video content to be published on the Explore Page and specifically within Reels content itself. With Instagram TV, IGLive and video capabilities already in place, what makes Reels separate from these other features on the platform?
To be honest, it is a separate feed within the social media platform where you can see videos from any account on Instagram, even those you do not follow. There is also a feature for Reels from private accounts to be published to this page as well.
